A Note of Thanks From Marilyn Holladay

Thank you.

The 2010 Rochester Pickleball Club Tournament and Festival is over. It came to a rather abrupt and wet end. We had beautiful, though sometimes really hot, weather until 6:00 p,m. on Sunday when the skies open and inundated us. While we were not able to complete the Mixed Doubles 3.5 and 4.0 competitions, you can find all other results at: http://usapa.org/tournamentnews/index.php

For those who were not among the wet huddled masses under the trees at the end, I did receive the sunflowers and card from all of you. I was very touched and totally surprised. Thank you very much, I have already decided to treat myself to “Christmas Carol the Classic Musical” at Meadow Brook Theater in December, preceded by a tour of Meadow Brook Hall decked out for Christmas and dinner at a nearby restaurant.

I big thank you goes out to those from Royal Oak who helped develop those great courts, those who were there with the food and drinks and especially Pat Sullivan for all of her help and cooperation.

I tried to make my list of referees -- difficult because some did not sign the scoresheets and much of my paperwork got drenched Sunday night. But ... my elderly brain came up with 32 names. Pickleball is growing the way it is because of the efforts put forth by so many to make tournaments like this possible. Standing in the sun doing refereeing for free has to be one of the biggest examples of this dedication.

I have said it to many people many times but feel I need to say it again -- Pickleball players are great. The camaraderie displayed in the face of intense competition shows what great sportsmen and women you are.

I hope to see all of you next year. The date has not been set as there are many additions and changes to the schedule next year.

  • Michigan Senior Olympics Winter Pickleball will be the end of January in Rochester
  • Michigan Senior Olympics Summer Pickleball will be May 15-22 in Oakland County.
  • Meijer State Games will be June 24-26 in Grand Rapids
  • Royal Oak will likely do a rated tournament at the Whittier Park courts at the end of the summer.
  • Troy, Kalamazoo and Auburn Hills also do tournaments in the spring.

So ... we are looking at doing the Rochester Pickleball Club Tournament & Festival in April on a Friday night, Saturday, and Sunday. More details to follow. At least we would not have to worry about rain or heat!

I will send an email to all of the 2010 participants when we set the date and have more details.

Once again, thank you for participating and making it so much fun. And thank you for the positive feedback I keep receiving in person and by email.

See you on the courts.

FORMAT: Format of play will be Round Robin except for age 60-64 and 65-69.

In the 19+ event there are 3 teams. Each team will play the other two. Each match will be best 2 our of 3 games to 11 win by 2. You will receive 1 point for each game you win. If you win 2/2 in a match you get a bonus point. Each team is guaranteed to play 4 games (at least 2 games in each of the 2 matches).

In the 50-54 group we are expecting 4 teams. Each team will play each of the other three in one game to 15 win by two.

In the 55-59 group we are expecting four or five teams. They will play Round Robin and each match will be 1 game to 15 win by 2. You will receive 1 point for each game you win.

There are 10 teams in 60-64 and two teams in 65-69 so they will be combined.  There will be 4 pools of three teams each. These three will play each other in one game to 15 win by two. From these games we will get a seeding for a 12 team single elimination bracket. Those who finish first in their pool will get a bye in the first round. The second place finishers will play a third place finisher from a different pool. The losers of these games are out. The winners play one of the first place finishers from a different pool. At the moment we have
MD 19+ two teams

MD 50+ three teams

MD 55+ two teams

MD 60+ six teams

MD 65+ three teams

MD 70+ one team

Unless I have some ages wrong, we will do the following:

Combine 19+, 50+, 55+ into a Round Robin pool of 7 teams. You would play each of the other six teams in one game to 11 win by 2. You would play six matches during the seven time slots which means almost constant play.

MD 60+ will be Round Robin pool of 6 teams. You will play each of the other five teams in one game to 15 win by 2. You would play five matches during the six time slots which means almost constant play.

MD 65+ combined with 70+ will be a Round Robin pool of 4 teams. Each team will have three matches. Each match will be best 2 our of 3 games to 11 win by 2. The Royal Oak Pickleball group will be serving hot dog/chips/drink for a donation of $3 (or more accepted) to raise money for these beautiful courts.

There will be a port-a-potty available.

FORMAT: Format of play will be Round Robin.

In the 50-54 event there are 4 players (as of the moment). Each team will have three matches. Each match will be best 2 our of 3 games to 11 win by 2. You will receive 1 point for each game you win. If you win 2/2 in a match you get a bonus point. Each team is guaranteed to play 6 games (at least 2 games in each of the 3 matches). Matches will follow one after the other. You will NOT have a time when teams in your age group are playing and you have a bye. Don't worry -- we will give a break between matches.

In both the 55-59 and 60-64 we are expecting five teams. These will also be Round Robin but there is not time to do 2 out of 3 game matches and be guaranteed to finish before we need glow in the dark balls, lines, and nets. So ... each match will be 1 game to 15 win by 2. You will receive 1 point for each game you win. You will playing 4 matches out of 5 time slots so each team will have a time slot where they have a bye. For some, this will be the first match and for others the last which means those teams will play 4 straight matches. Hence, we will have a break between matches as needed.

Medals are awarded after Round Robin play based on the following -- in this order:

-- Most points received for winning games
-- head-to-head winner in case of tie
-- point differential in case there is still a tie

RPC Player Announcement: Recreational Speed Pickleball 8-25-2010

The Rochester Pickleball Club Tournament and Festival begins this Wednesday with your event!

LOCATION (REMEMBER IT WAS CHANGED): Whittier Park in Royal Oak. If you want to MapQuest or GPS it try using the address 720 E. Farnum, Royal Oak, MI 48068.

ARRIVAL: Please arrive by 8:30am to check in and sign a new waiver for Royal Oak (the other one was for a tournament being held in Rochester.)

BRING: Bring water and a snack if you need them. There will be a port-a-potty available.

FORMAT: You will be playing a series of doubles games with different partners.

HOW IT WORKS: If we have the 17 people we are expecting, we will use the numbers on the player list 1-17 and add or subtract from there as needed.
  • 16 people will be put on 4 courts with one person sitting out.
  • At the sound of the whistle play begins (you should have warmed up BEFORE 9:00)
  • After 9 minutes the whistle will blow again. Play stops and the scores are recorded on an index card provided. Write your name and YOUR score.
  • Winners stay on the same court but split up to opposite sides of the net.
  • Losers go to the next higher court number and split up to opposite sides of the net.
  • The losers at the highest numbered court (probably 4) will either sit out or move to court 1 and split up to play the winners left there. To sit out or to move to court 1 will be determined by whether or not we have one or two people who sat our the previous game.
  • Once we have 4 people on each court again, the whistle will blow. The game will go for 9 minutes. The whistle will blow and we will follow the same process again.
  • Who serves first??? Arbitrarily I am deciding that the team by the back cyclone fence will serve first, NOT the team by the snow fence.
We will go over this Wednesday morning before you begin, so don't worry if it sounds confusing.

  • After 2 hours we will quit. I will then total the scores for each person and calculate the average # of points they scored in all of the games they played. I will then give out medals!!
  • It is up to players to avoid being a partner with the same person twice. But it might be unavoidable. No big deal.
Thanks,

Marilyn Holladay
