MI Pickleball Referee Corps Manager

Dear MI Pickleball Players and Refs,

Some of you have pickleball referee experience, others have expressed interest in pickleball referee training. Thank You!

Steve Balasia and Don Ritter are training refs for the upcoming SE Michigan pickleball tournaments, including the MSO 2009 Summer Pickleball Games.

Don Ritter is serving as the SE Michigan "Pickleball Referee Corps Manager". Don is taking responsibility for contacting players with referee news, including updates on rule clarifications, referee training and referee volunteer opportunities.

Here is a sample question from Don Ritter's Referee Training Questionnaire:
  • "It is not a fault when the server misses the ball while trying to hit it." True or False?!?

Now, 'just for the FUN of it', the first player to email me with the correct answer, "true or false", wins a spring green pickleball. And the first Lead Ref to cite the Rule wins a sunshine orange pickleball.

Ready! Set!! Go!!!

Yours in pickleball, Janet Razz

MIPickleball@gmail.com

----------------

  • Winning Answer: "False" Marilyn Holladay, MI at 7:47am
  • Winning Answer: "4E1" Wayne Roswell, FL at 7:48am

4.E. Service Faults. During the service, it is a fault if:

4.E.1. The server misses the ball when trying to hit it. If the ball lands on the ground without the server swinging at the ball, it is not a fault.

You can be a Winner too! If you would like your name added to the list of players receiving Don Ritter's rules/refs updates, please email your contact information to MIPickleball@gmail.com

SE Michigan Inter-Community Pickleball League

SE Michigan Ambassadors,

Are you getting any positive feedback on the formation of the Inter-Community Pickleball League?

I am.

For Rochester and Troy, the consensus is that Monday evening 6-9pm would be a good time for weekly league play.

Troy has lined Pickleball courts available, and Rochester is working on getting access to tennis courts that can be taped starting June 1st.

Troy has 8 women who intend to form two teams by recruiting 8 men.
There is likely enough interest in Rochester for 2 teams as well.

We need to get the contact info for your team captains so that we can arrange for the League Development Meeting on Saturday April 18th at 10am in Waterford.

Please check with your local contacts and let me and Gary Bejin know what your players want to do regarding Inter-Community play this summer.

Thanks,
-Dick Manasseri

MI Pickleball All Star Cast!!! Future Features?!? YouTube Pickleball News!?!

Dear Dick,

Wayne Roswell has permanently raised the bar.

http://tanglewoodpickleballclub.blogspot.com/2009/03/tanglewood-pickleball-crawl.html

Your next edition of 'Pickleball News by Dick Manasseri' will have to be performed and recorded on YouTube. We can catch the crowd with a lead in song by 'The Manasseri Family Singers'.
  • Singing Pickleball Pete, with his engaging voice and winning charm, is sure to grab the attention of the audience as he sings the bullet points.
  • Chuck and Steve, wearing their Gumbel Gherkins shirts, can do a little 'straight man stand-up comedy' inviting players to the ref training.
  • Each Tourney Director can announce the name of their Tourney with a 'ta-da' -- styling the course line-up after the Mickey Mouse Club role call.
  • The O'riginal Picklettes will WoW 'em singing the recreational announcements.
  • And the introduction of New Ambassadors -- well "ever a surprise... ... ..."
We'll never be as good as Wayne...but even the longest newsletter is a short and entertaining video, we have an ALL STAR cast, and I've seen you Ambassador -- you can dance!
Yours in pickleball, Janet Razz

Pickleball News by Dick Manasseri

March 26, 2009

Dear Pickleball Players,

There are now over 450+ readers of Pickleball News in and around Michigan, more than 75 new readers since the latest edition just 6 weeks ago. Many of you have just completed your first Beginner’s Demo/Clinic and begun to experience Drop-in play, or maybe your first recreational tournament or Novice Ladder. Others have experienced the Michigan Senior Olympics and are looking for even more competition.

You are all part of the phenomenal growth of Pickleball in the Great Lakes Region, particularly in Michigan. Using USAPA Memberships as an indicator, Michigan has grown by over 300% in the last 5 months, and the Great Lakes Region is now the 2nd largest USAPA region. Thank you for your participation and support.

In this edition, read about:

  • USAPA Skills Clinic - Thursday April 23rd, 1:00 – 4:00pm

The OPC in Rochester is sponsoring a Pickleball Skills Clinic intended to improve your performance and enjoyment of the game. This clinic is intended to better prepare you and your partner for ladder play as well as the upcoming tournaments and the Inter-Community League that are listed below.

We are fortunate to have a husband-wife team, USAPA Members Vic and Lynn Wittkowski, as our instructors. Both Vic and Lynn have won medals in recent Pickleball tournaments as well as having earned numerous awards in the tennis world. They will provide extensive game strategies and stroke drills as well as hands-on coaching. For more information, checkout
http://usapa.org/file/mi/Pickleball_Skills_Clinic_2009.pdf

Attendance at the clinic will also provide you with the opportunity to indicate your interest in participating in the Partner Search Program where we assist you in finding a partner(s) for the upcoming tournaments.

  • Inter-Community Pickleball League Forming

Think Softball and Volleyball Leagues. Why not a new Inter-Community Pickleball League! For those of you in Oakland County, East and West Divisions could be formed to minimize travel, e.g.

East – Rochester, Troy, Royal Oak, Etc.
West- Hartland, Northville, Waterford, Etc.
Other counties could develop a similar program.

Do you have 8 or more competitive players in your community who want to play matches with other nearby communities? (50+ this year, younger groups future years)
Are there 4 men and 4 women in your community that could be recruited per team?

The initial response to this notion of a SE Michigan Inter-Community Pickleball League has been overwhelmingly positive. If you are interested, here is what you should do:

Organize a group of 4 men and 4 women (50+) who want to play as a team and select a Team Captain and a Team Name.

Identify at least 2 courts in your community that can be reserved for league play for 2 hours each week for the periods June 1st – July 3rd and July 13th – August 14th. The preference is for outdoor courts, if possible.

By Friday April 10th forward the name of your Team Captain to Ambassador Gary Bejin (carolbejin@yahoo.com 248-770-7589) so that he/she can be invited to the League Development Meeting at 10:00am on Saturday April 18th in Waterford. Include the location and schedule of the courts that are available for league play in your community.

At the League Development Meeting, the details for the first 5-week season will be finalized. After a break for the MSO Pickleball events July 7-10th, there will be another 5-week season July 13th – August 14th with changes developed from the experience of the initial 5 weeks.

  • USAPA Referee Training

We need your help to ensure the high quality of the upcoming Showcase Events by volunteering to be part of the SE Michigan Referee Corps. It’s a great way to get a better understanding of the game too.

USAPA Members Don Ritter and Steve Balasia are two of our lead referees and they are conducting Referee Training sessions in several of the locations that are hosting Showcase Events. Don and Steve trained players at Hartland recently. The next Referee Training class will be offered in Northville on Wednesday April 29th at 11:00am. After the classroom instruction, students will be able to practice by shadowing the instructors during live matches. If you are interested in participating, please contact USAPA Member Joe Barberio at jbarberio@ci.northville.mi.us .

  • Recreation

Seniors continue to step forward to learn the game and volunteer to teach others, young and old. They are borrowing equipment to teach their families on a Sunday after dinner on the driveway just like that day in 1965 when Pickleball was created on a family driveway in Washington State.

Recreation Center managers that we met at the MRPA convention are partnering with physical education teachers that we met at the MAHPERD convention to devise summer drop-in programs, summer camps for school children as well as and intramural programs. Be on the lookout for the summer brochures in your town and promote these Pickleball programs with your own participation and your encouragement of friends and families to enjoy Pickleball outdoors. It’s a great way to have younger players join in the fun.

Troy Park and Recreation has announced a Pickleball Day Camp for 6th-8th graders, and 9th-12th graders to be taught by MSO Silver Medal winner, Physical Educator and USAPA Member Nancy Thoenes.
http://usapa.org/file/mi/Troy_Pickleball_Summer_2009.pdf
Troy will also be offering outdoor Pickleball drop-in sessions several nights a week at two Middle Schools.

Rochester Avon Recreation Authority (RARA) will offer outdoor Pickleball drop-in sessions for all ages twice a week this summer with a free Pickleball Clinic to kickoff the program.
http://usapa.org/file/mi/RARA%20Flyer%20032509.pdf

Royal Oak will feature programs for all ages this summer taught by Ambassador Pat Sullivan.
Wolverine Lake is setting up outdoor courts. Waterford, Saline, Bloomfield, Chelsea, Brookwood CC, New Baltimore, St Clair Shores, Pittsfield, Windsor (ON) and other communities are working on plans for outdoor play or extended indoor recreation programs this summer. Portage, MI is already “Moving the Pickle Outside”
http://mipickleball.usapa.org/2009/03/portage-pickleball-moving-pickle.html

Beginner’s Demo/Clinics are scheduled for many communities including several Detroit Recreation Centers (April 8th), Ann Arbor (April 4th & May 5th), Madison Heights Pot Luck Picnic (May 20th), Marysville (June 17th) and a therapeutics program at the Ypsilanti Recreation Center (June 29th and July 20th).

Please send us information about your new programs so that we can promote them in this newsletter as well as on the websites mentioned above.

We are learning that Novice players enjoy Showcase Recreational Events like the Spring Fling and Pop ‘Til You Drop events at the OPC in Rochester. Once Beginners complete the USAPA Demo/Clinic, they are typically ready to purchase a paddle, consider playing in a Novice Ladder, and even play “Speed Pickleball” where their partners are randomly selected and socialization is the name of the game. USAPA Member Krystee Dorland helped develop these concepts and served as a very hospitable Director for these two events that resulted in the 1st event where every player joined the USAPA to gain the Member discount and to support the organization that supports their enjoyment of the game.

An Irish Pickleball Ballad by The O'riginal Picklettes!!! Sandy! Sue! Jeanne!

An Irish Pickleball Ballad

by

The O'riginal Picklettes
Sandy! Sue! Jeanne!

When you're playing pickleball
All the world seems BRIGHT and GAY
It's the fastest growing sport you know
That people like to playyyyyye

It began with a dog named Pickles
Who liked to run and play
He lived on Bainbridge Island
In the good ole USA

He liked to fetch the ball and hide
He raaaaan all around
The kids would yell at him to STOP!
And the ball'd be on the ground

So get your pickleball racket
And call your friends today
To come over to the OPC
So thaaaaat you can playyyy

When pickleball people are playing
They take my breath away,
They're the nicest funniest people,
I thank God for them each dayaaaa

We've all been playing pickleball
Its' been an awesome scene
We've learned a lot from all of you
Larry, Clare, and Gene

Let's cheer the USAPA
When you serve don't have a "let"
Because we're pickle-holics
We've become The Picklettes

We want to take a moment
To honor people who plan it
Let's hear it for our favoooooorites
Our Dicky and our Janet

Thank you allllllllll for coming
To the OPC tonight
We've had a lot of fun with you
We hope we've been all right

Let's all get up and cheer our best
And yell it through the halls
The very beeeeest sport around
Is our awesome pickleball!

Pickleball Tournament Report: by Wayne Roswell

"The Tanglewood Pickleball Club in Sebring FL. made history in the Atlantic South Region. First, it was the first USAPA sanctioned tournament to be held in the Atlantic South Region. Second, it was sponsored by a pickle company. How neat is that? Who da thunk!" Wayne Roswell, Sebring FL March 9, 2009

Read the rest of the story here:
Including Wayne's report on Jack and Patrick!!
"One of the hardest fought matches and most exciting in the tournament was the men’s 60-64 category between Tanglewood’s best, Rich Donald and Al Goldberg and the state champions from Michigan Patrick McPhail and Jack Licata. Al Goldberg remarked, “I gave my whole body to that one, man. That is the toughest match I have ever played.” The Tanglewood team of Goldberg and Donald prevailed in a third game tie-breaker to win the gold."

Subject: Pickleball! "Two gentlemen are in"

I'm lucky! I get copied on lively pickleball conversations from across the Nations. Yesterday, I received an email with a subject line that reads: "Two gentlemen are in" from our friends Wayne Roswell (ON/FL) and Greenie (FL/MI).

Wayne of Tanglewood fame, is the Tourney Director for the upcoming Heartland FL Tourney on March 6! (Not to be confused with the Hartland MI Tourney on April 11. Both the Heartland FL and the Hartland MI Tounaments are USAPA Sanctioned Tier 4!) I understood from the email that Wayne worked his wonders and fit two gentlemen in the draw for his March 6th Tourney.

The email conversation traveled off topic, around a few corners, and down a different path, so I never questioned the subject line that reads: "Two gentlemen are in".

UNTIL I received a phone call from Greenie...that also traveled off topic, around a few corners, and down a different path...

UNTIL I finally came back full circle to "Two gentlemen are in"!

Guess who the "Two gentlemen" are!?!

Clues:

  • The "Two gentlemen" created the Westsiders vs Eastsiders Pickleball Challenge
  • The "Two gentlemen" are Threepeat Plus Pickleball Champions
  • The "Two gentlemen" do play...for the FL SUN and MI FUN of it! And they also play to WIN!

Answer:

"Two gentlemen are in"

Patrick McPhail and Jack Licata

"Have fun storming the castle, boys!!"

MI Pickleball Players are cheering for you!!

Please ask Carol and Gayle to double hug and cheeky kiss Wayne and Greenie for me! I'm pickle green with envy that you guys are in FL enjoying Wayne's hospitality! And Tourney with 100+ Picklers! WoWie ZoWie Wayne! How did that happen!?!

Bring me home a Mt Olive Pickle Prize :) !

Yours in pickleball, Janet Razz with the grit of a Westsider and the class (or was that sass) of an Eastsider. You can take the gal out of the Westside -- but you can't take the Westside out of the gal :) ! xox
