What is this USAPA Rankings Business All About? – Marilyn Holladay

In sports, we often hear about teams or individuals being the top ranked or fifth ranked in their sport in the nation. We assume this means they are the best or the fifth best at what they do at this point in the season. But … how is this determined. It is usually not from all teams/individuals competing head-to-head in the same tournament. Therefore, the organization governing that sport needs to set up criteria for ranking. This usually involves taking into account who the competition has been, not just the number of wins and losses, and often also involves the margin of victory or defeat.

How does this apply to us as Pickleball players? USAPA sanctions certain tournaments. There are four tiers with Tier 1 being national tournaments, Tier 2 large regional tournaments, Tier 3 tournaments are similar to the numbers we have seen at MSO, and Tier 4 are the smaller tournaments but still must have at least 40 entries. New tournaments are usually Tier 4 until they become established.

Basically, points are awarded for finishing 1st, 2nd or 3rd with more points awarded for larger tournaments. For example, if you finished first in a national tournament:1500 points for Tier 1, 900 for Tier 2, 600 for Tier 3, and 400 for Tier 4. This should reflect the fact that the winner had to play more matches against tougher opponents. The MSO is USAPA-sanctioned at Tier 3. The June 14th Summer Smash in Auburn Hills is USAPA-sanctioned at Tier 4.

These rankings MAY be used to seed a tournament. What is seeding? It is designed to organize brackets in such a way that the best teams/individuals end up in the finals. There is always the possibility of upsets as in any sport. If seeding is used for a Pickleball tournament, the top-ranked player will begin play against the lowest-ranked player. The USAPA tournament software allows for seeding in this way or random seeding.

At this point in the development of USAPA, many players are not ranked. Are you?
Go to http://usapa.org/rankings/inquiry/USAPA_pointsinquiry.php and look for your name and the name of your friends.

For example, checkout the Ranking Point for Women in 2009 60+ Doubles http://www.usapa.org/rankings/history/history_reports/current_history_reports/Seniors%2060+_Womens%20Doubles.htm

Do you see any names you recognize?

Important note: You have to be an USAPA member to get ranking points. One more good reason to join!!!!

USAPA Membership

Five reasons to join now:
  • Discounts on paddles from Pickleball Goodies
  • Discounted registration on future Showcase Events
  • Ranking Points for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place by age group in the MSO and the Auburn Hills Summer Smash
  • Participation in the Regional Tournament August 26th-30th for Competitive and Recreational Seniors, Open and Junior players

MI Pickleball Nears 200 USAPA Members!

Today's USA Pickleball Association homepage http://usapa.org/ "In the News" top story features a video clip of Pickleball in San Diego, CA. Nothing beats Michigan's Spring weather, so the California SUN wasn't the first thing to WOW me about this video -- it was the Pickleball dedicated OUTDOOR courts that caught my eye and flushed my cheeks pickle-green with envy.

In Michigan, playing pickleball indoors on badminton courts or outdoors on striped/taped tennis courts, we have an abundance of lines. MI Pickleball is like a '2 for 1 sale'. Play MI Pickleball to get FANTASTIC physical exercise and (along with a bowl of MI Traverse City cherries) a healthy dose of dementia prevention is thrown into the mix :) ! Like doing a crossword puzzle, the challenge of figuring out which lines we are playing exercises our cognitive function. We take the expression "Go Figure" to a new level.

Michiganders are obviously up to the challenge! MI Pickleball is nearing the 200 USAPA Member mark...and 'we've only just begun'! After all -- we are getting younger everyday we play Pickleball! And because of the volunteer efforts and energy of Michigan's USAPA Members, the opportunities to play Pickleball everyday are growing! MI Places to Play Pickleball WoWie ZoWIe!! Who knows we may even see Michigan Pickleball dedicated OUTDOOR courts sprouting up soooooooooooon! Spring is in the air!

Pure OUTDOOR Pickleball...just for the SUN of it!

A luscious, brisk, sunny afternoon of MI OUTDOOR Pickleball at the Auburn Hills Community Center, today! Wind Power challenged Player Placement on every shot and rally! A taste of heaven! Pure OUTDOOR Pickleball...just for the SUN of it!

MI OUTDOOR Pickleball! MI Spring Joy 2009!

One of the things I love about being the OPC Rochester Pickleball Ladder Manager is that I'm often among the first to hear when a new grandbaby graces the world with joy! We welcome the grandbabies into our arms, our hearts, and our schedules. I'm also privileged to hear of grandchildren's concerts, sporting events, and graduations. The love that is born with the baby grows, and grows, and grows with the child. So indulge me as I use my own sweet grandbaby to demonstrate the wonder and the challenge Spring weather presents to MI OUTDOOR Pickleball games. These two photos, taken in the same week, demonstrate MI Spring 2009 Sweatshirt and Swimsuit Weather sharing time and space. And demonstrate that I'm a Grannie 1st and being a Pickler is a distant 2nd :) !

MI OUTDOOR Pickleball is growing! Hip! Hip! Hooray!!!! Grab your sweatshirt, grab your sunscreen and grab a game at one of the MI OUTDOOR courts striped with pickleball lines or one of the MI OUTDOOR courts picklers have permission to tape.

Watch for more details June 1st.

The SE Michigan Pickleball League is ready to kickoff its first season on Monday May 18th with Rochester at Troy and Hartland at Waterford. Northville and Royal Oak begin their seasons the following Monday.

Pickleball is Earning Its Stripes
The recreation opportunities to play Pickleball outside in our parks come alive starting now with several communities “striping” tennis courts on a permanent basis.

Thanks to Elaine Torvinen and Carla Vaughn, the Troy Recreation Department has striped two tennis courts at Baker Middle School and two more at Smith Middle School. These courts are available all day to be shared with tennis players and reserved for the Troy Pickleball programs described below.

Thanks to Carolyn Wells, two tennis courts at Brookwood Country Club have been striped for fun family games of Pickleball for their members and guests.

Thanks to Maria Williams, tennis courts in Wolverine Lake are being striped as well.

Thanks to Pat Sullivan and Mike Simioni, a tennis court at Upton Park was fully converted to a Pickleball court last year, and, with the support of the Recreation Department, the expectation is that two other tennis courts will be converted to multiple Pickleball courts during summer.

Please check out and support the programs in the following cities by using the flyers listed or by contacting your local recreation centers:

"Transitions" USAPA E-Newsletter May 2009

Transitions—Thank You Earl—Welcome Dick

USA Pickleball Association E-Newsletter May 2009

Earl Hill has decided to step-down from his USAPA Board role as Director of International/National Relations & Head of the Ambassadors Program. Earl will continue to support the USAPA in several ways including serving on the National Tournament Committee and continuing to recruit new Ambassadors. Earl created the Ambassador Program as you might expect from one of the true pioneers of the USAPA. We all owe Earl a debt of gratitude for his many contributions to Pickleball as a leader, a mentor, and as a player.

One of Earl’s recruits, Dick Manasseri, Great Lakes Regional Ambassador, has been appointed to head the Ambassadors Program and to serve on the USAPA Board as the Director of International/National Relations. Dick will work with the Regional Ambassadors to facilitate the rapid growth of Pickleball in North America; he will also coordinate collaborative efforts among the emerging Pickleball programs on other continents.
