USA Pickleball Association Member Spotlight

PROFILE OF A CHAMPION: Marika's Story

"I have always looked upon life as a gift
and I have vowed to live each day to its fullest. I take advantage of every opportunity that comes my way; take part in every unique experience, and make sure that those around me have a smile on their face. I was born in Budapest Hungary during a period of social unrest. My family escaped from the country to provide a better life for me and for my sisters, but during our escape, I was exposed to a bombing and lost my hearing. However, I was fortunate to have parents who refused to see me as a poor little Deaf child and they treated me like my sisters and had high expectations of me. Since they refused to let my Deafness be an obstacle, I too refused to ever let it define who I was or what I could do. To this day, even though I face discrimination I will not let it deter me.

"Communication was difficult for me. My parents spoke Hungarian. We arrived in America where English was spoken. As a Deaf child I was taught American Sign Language. It could have been a challenge for me. But I found an outlet and a way of expressing myself. I immersed myself in sports and I excelled.

"I always enjoyed playing games, sports and enjoying a competitive challenge. Some people compete in various sports or games because they have an inner burning to defeat their opponents or challengers; it is what drives them. I have, however, always felt a love for THE challenge, to better myself emotionally and physically, and to how show everyone how teamwork can bring you joy or selfishness can bring you defeat. I am open to losing and a good sport because it reminds my inner child that there is always room for improvement. To congratulate a challenger who has bested me with a smile is not easy for some to do, but for me, I smile inside because they deserved it.

"Not only have I competed in sports for the love of the games and for myself, I have competed competitively. I was involved in sports at the Michigan School for the Deaf where I won numerous awards; in the Deaf Olympics (an international competition) in my younger years, Oakland County’s senior games and now the Michigan Senior Olympics. I have been working and training and competing my whole life. I also volunteer my time with numerous charities. I have been given so much in life and its imperative that I give back.

"Here’s a little more about me. I am currently an instructor at Macomb Community College where I have taught the advanced American Sign Language Classes for over 20 years. I was the first certified Deaf substance abuse counselor in the State of Michigan where I practiced for over two decades. I was a gubernatorial appointee to both the Michigan Board of Mental Health and the Division on Deafness where I served for eight years. Additionally I have held many board positions in organizations of and for Deaf people. I am a current Board member of Deaf Community Advocacy Network (DEAF C.A.N.!) and the Deaf Women’s Advocacy Services (DWAS), an active volunteer and Committee Chair for “Relay for Life” and an advisor for the American Sign Language Club at Macomb Community College. I am the proud mother of three children, the grandmother of three. In my spare time, I travel abroad and have visited over 20 foreign countries.

"I wanted to share with you a recent milestone in my life – a personal goal I set for myself a few years ago. When I was a child, a Deaf child, my mother always encouraged me by saying “Mari(k)a, you can do anything you set your mind to do”. She always supported my next challenge and said “go for it, do your best and keep trying, that is all I expect”. Throughout my teen-age years, high school, college and after, I received various medals in Karate, Fencing, Javelin and other sports. About 5 years ago, I set a goal for myself to reach 100 medals in total and promised both my Father and Mother that I would strive for that goal. To be quite honest, I never really thought it was possible as I’m not a spring chicken anymore ;-)

"The really nice effect of continuing with these various sports and activities was the support from my own family, my husband and children, who kept telling me to go for it and keep trying….How strange is it see your child sign to you that they are proud of you and supported you through all your struggles and challenges? Inside, it feels good and often I wonder, who is the parent now? Aren’t I supposed to be telling them I am proud? My inner soul is smiling.

"This update is not to brag about how many medals I have won, or to make a place in history….it is to remind my friends and community to find the activities that make you smile and to challenge yourself always to become a better person. I am so happy that the little child inside me still has that flame which burns with a competitive edge; it keeps my soul young and happy.

!! The Joy of Pickleball in the Park !!

The OPC Health and Wellness Community now have an opportunity to support the Greater Rochester Community by sharing their enthusiasm and skills at the RARA Greater Rochester Pickleball Fest, August 26-30, 2009 at the Rochester Municipal Park Tennis Courts.

There will be a Free Clinic on Wednesday August 26th at 9am followed by Recreational Speed Pickleball for Seniors 50+ on Thursday at 9am. It would be great to have a large showing of Novice and Intermediate Senior players in the Park enjoying the game that they've learned at the OPC.

For Intermediate and Advanced OPC players, the RARA Pickleball Fest offers a USAPA Sanctioned (Tier 4) Tournament. The Senior Divisions 50+ and 65+ include Men's and Women's Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Men's and Women's Singles. Pickleball players will be able to enjoy the fun of good competition in the evening starting at 5pm on Wednesday through Saturday and on Saturday at 9am.

For OPC players that want to introduce the game to their families, the RARA Pickleball Fest will also include Sunday afternoon Mixed Generation play where the team members should be from different generations. This is the perfect time for us to partner up with our children and/or grandchildren and get the whole family and the greater Rochester neighboring to witness the joy of Pickleball in the Park.

On Sunday evening, we even have a chance to support our grandchildren and their friends in the Youth Division Games.

There are 19+ Divisions too.

OPC players can help make the RARA Pickleball Fest in August a successful first step that we can continue in the Fall by supporting the Rochester Community School Enrichment Program's offering of the Rochester Pickleball Club for families every Saturday afternoon at Rochester Adams High School starting on September 12th as well as a new Pickleball Intramural Program at Hart Middle School.

We are grateful to the OPC for getting us started with Pickleball and now the OPC and its members have the chance to promote the health, fitness, and social benefits to the entire community by circulating the flyers, encouraging participation, volunteering and, most of all, by playing in the RARA Greater Rochester Pickleball Fest.

RARA is generously offering a $5 discount to all USAPA Members.

Thanks for your support,

Pitching Pickleball
Royal Oak seniors play fast-growing game with gusto

By Marty Budner
ECCENTRIC STAFF WRITER

There is a group of senior athletes in Royal Oak who will tell you there's nothing sweeter than a good game of pickleball.

It's fast-paced, and you're laughing. It's not like tennis where you're serious. You don't even know you're exercising, which is even better,” says 67-year-old Pat Sullivan, a retired Royal Oak resident who is given credit for introducing the fast-growing sport into the Royal Oak Parks and Recreation program. “It's a good addiction because you can find enjoyment so fast, and it's fun, so why not go out and have some fun.”

Pickleball is nearly as easy to understand as it is to play.

It is a combination of tennis and table tennis contested on a badminton court. The game is played with a baseball-sized whiffle ball and wooden composite ping-pong style paddles. It can be played as singles or doubles, indoors or outdoors. Strength is not a factor, so men and women play on an equal playing field as ability is the only measurement.

Every Monday and Wednesday during the mid-day hours, the Jack and Patti Salter Community Center in Royal Oak is bustling with the slapping sounds of the ball hitting the paddle and the whistling sounds of tennis shoes sliding across the gym floor.

The Monday session attracts close to 20 people and the Wednesday session around 16. The bottom line for all the participants is they get some exercise playing a sport they enjoy in a relaxed atmosphere.

It's very friendly and competitive, and you get a good work out, You can see everyone in here sweating,” says Bruce Castle, a 63-year-old Royal Oak resident while taking a break between games. “It's a very easy game to pick up, especially if you've played some racquet sports before. Some people who have never played anything have done very well at it. A lot of people laugh at it because it's called pickleball, but once they see it and play it, they really like it,” he says.

Like tennis, the idea is to serve and volley the ball over the net. The serve must go to the opposite side of the court and land in a designated area. The ball is volleyed back-and-forth until a point is won.

One main difference is players cannot approach the net and slam a return shot on the fly. An approximate six-foot wide area exists on each side of the net, and it is illegal for players to hit from that so-called ‘kitchen' zone without the ball bouncing first. If so, the other player or team wins the point.

In doubles, both players on a team must serve before the other team takes over. Like tennis and table tennis, points are earned on serves only.

I retired about three years ago from Chrysler, and I was looking for something I would enjoy doing that would give me exercise,” says Mike Simoni, a 62-year-old Royal Oak resident who learned about the game via a recreation brochure published by the city. “I considered volleyball and ping pong, and I saw this thing called pickleball. I had never heard of it before...they said it was new on the paper that I read. So I said I wanted to go and try that. It happened to be the first thing I tried, and I really enjoyed it. It gave me everything that I was looking for and I've met so many good people,” he says. “It's a friendly atmosphere, but it can get pretty competitive. I like that competition. And it's good exercise. I love it. I really do. It's addictive.”

Sullivan learned the sport at her retirement community in Sun City Grand, Arizona - a place she calls the ‘Pickleball Heaven' of the U.S. - and brought it to Royal Oak two years ago. It has become a staple activity on the senior program menu.

The sport's popularity has resulted in the creation of a new senior league called the Southeastern Michigan Pickle League (SEMPL). The league is divided into the East Division (Royal Oak, Troy and Rochester) and the West Division (Hartland, Waterford and Northville).

The sport, which has a national website http://usapa.org/ , has become one of the more widely-contested events in the Michigan Senior Olympics recently held in Rochester. The City of Royal Oak is even considering building eight outdoor pickleball-only courts.

You can play and get a good game going without a whole lot of instruction, as long as you have some hand-eye coordination,” says Sullivan, who currently teaches the sport to both young and old as part of the Royal Oak recreation program. “The sport is just getting bigger and bigger.”

Pickleball Friends Flock To Pickle

The original goal of the MI Pickleball blog was to start a lively conversation about PICKLEBALL Michigan Style, promoting and supporting the growth of Michigan Great Lakes Pickleball.

The shared Detroit and Windsor border, the shared blogger coaching from our pickleball friend Wayne Roswell (ON/FL), and the shared shear pleasure in the sport -- quickly included Ontario Picklers as active participants in the conversation.

Canadian snowbirds and Michigan snowbirds often meet when they flock to pickle in AZ and FL. Those of us wintering in the Mitten, are happy when our pickleball friends fly back home, sharing their dinKs, smASHES, and looooooooong rrrrrrrrr a l l i e s!!!

Michigan Senior Olympics (MSO) fostered an opportunity for international pickleball friendships to bask in the Northern SUMMER SUN. Snowbirds Donna and Morgan Robins (ON/AZ) traveled to compete in the MSO 2009 Summer Games with snowbird Doug Kant (MI/AZ).

Chi Pickleball Enthusiast

Dear MI Pickleball Players,

Approaching my 1 year anniversary as a USA Pickleball Association Member, my gratitude to the Michigan Pickleball Community can not be overstated.

Those of you that share the courts with me, know it's still a challenge for me to keep my eye on the ball and my focus on the game. I do much better when I don't talk...but that rarely happens.

Friday, playing with Alex across from Dai Lin and Marlene, I missed so many 'easy' shots - I was sure I'd be better off taking up knitting. However, one of the many beauties of pickleball is that being a "good player" or a "good athlete" isn't a prerequisite for enjoying the sport..."just for the FUN of it!"

I'm the quintessential recreational pickleball player. That's why my profile reads "Chi Pickleball Enthusiast" rather than "Pickleball Pro" :) !

"Chi Pickleball Enthusiast"!?!

Chi has many meanings - mostly it means life!

Pickleball has many meanings - mostly it means FUN, friends, and fitness!!!

Enthusiast has many meanings - mostly it means a person happy to take part in and share an activity and/or an idea...

The life pickleball brings to me and the life I bring to pickleball is filled with FUN, friends, and fitness. I'm happy about that!

Yours in pickleball, Janet Razz

Picklers continue to enjoy and recommend Mark Maxwell's Live Long Live Well (LLLW) 30 minute introduction to Pickleball!

"Pickleball is a great game that is fun for all ages and is rapidly becoming a phenomenon across the United States. It is played on a badminton court using a paddle and a wiffleball. It is a true "lifetime sport" that can help people both get and stay in shape. Host Mark Maxwell learns about the game from special guest Dick Manasseri, a Michigan Senior Olympics pickleball champion. This program covers the basics of the game and demonstrates both singles and doubles play."

Once again WoWing the MI Pickleball Community, Mark Maxwell documents MSO 2009 DanceSport. The MSO 2009 DanceSport Co-Directors are Pickleball's very own USAPA Ambassadors Melissa Muha and Bob Northrop!! WoW! Double WoW!! Talk about reaping the benefits of cross training!!
"LLLW went to the Michigan Senior Olympics 2009 DanceSport competition to learn about the world of ballroom dancing. Host Mark Maxwell was joined by two lovely ladies, his wife Sherry Maxwell and dancing expert Blaire Miller. The event was held at the Royal Park Hotel in Rochester, Michigan as part of the Senior Olympics Winter Games. Ballroom dancing is one of the most complete mind-body experiences that there is. It is an activity that engages both sides of the brain and has been linked to increased longevity."

Read the full C & G article, featuring Clara Gamble in weightligting, here: Burning Bright

Pickleball news quoted from "Burning Bright" posted here:

In a pickle Pickleball, which was played at the Auburn Hills Community Center, is one of the more popular sports in the MSO. Described as a combination of badminton, tennis and Ping-Pong, pickleball is played with a wooden paddle and a perforated plastic ball on a badminton-size court with a low net.

The July 7 women's doubles competition brought together 40 players ages 50 to 84 from as near Rochester Hills and as far as West Virginia. Bloomfield Hills residents Sook Wilkinson and Nancy Roberston won the gold medal in the 50-54 age division. "For me, this is my first time, so I just came with no expectations and to just enjoy and have fun," Wilkinson said. "It's nice to see good competition and meet people."

Although it was Wilkinson's first Senior Olympics, Robertson had already competed in the Michigan Senior Olympics Winter Games Festival, where she won the gold medal in her age division in doubles. Robertson, who began playing pickleball last July, persuaded Wilkinson to give the sport a try soon after. Since then, they've been part of a trend that the USA Pickleball Association calls one of the fastest growing sports in America. "The competition is just getting better and better because pickleball is spreading," Robertson said about the top-notch competition on display at the Senior Olympics. "Since (last) July, it has spread unbelievably."

For Hilda Weber of Rochester, who learned pickleball after years of playing tennis, this was also her first MSO. Her partner, Dai Lin Shu, a Rochester Hills resident, had also competed in the Winter Festival and earned a silver medal in the women's 55-59 division. "It's the competition that's exciting, and anything with a racquet, I like," Weber said. "Staying healthy and getting exercise is fun."

Weber and Shu also won gold medals in their division. On top of the fun had by all, the main focus was the health benefit. "It's been really fun," Wilkinson said about the event. "It's all just to keep us moving and active, and this is a good way to do it." Other gold medalists were Jan Allard of Rochester and Donna Clancy of Royal Oak in the 60-64 division, and Carol Elias of Rochester and Bonnie Heinz of Arizona in the 65-69 division.

Pickleball got started at the Tanglewood Park (Age Well Services) in the fall of 2008. We were limited to a room that was four feet shorter than the length of a Pickleball court.

Despite its limitations, we had a lot of fun and did learn some basic rules. The strategy, of course, was vastly different since there were no opportunities to hit long strokes, full length serves, and high, long lobs. Also, some bad habits resulted, such as partial swings when up against the back wall. It did give us a lot of practice in the no zone (1/2 way up), and it certainly added to spirited kitchen line warfare.

Our short indoor court is a plus as a format for some of the individuals who have extremely limited mobility. In fact, I would say it could be a future recreational option for anyone. Just call it "Modified Pickleball". In bad weather, it is a reality for us now. Of course, our 80-84 age Gold Medalists, Elaine Carsok and Duane Quigg don't need it yet. They are too busy beating all of us on the full court outside.

In late May, two courts were painted on the service road next to the building. It has been really great to have a full sized court to help us become more competitive, although the perpetual wind seems to be a big influence on the game at times. Also, the road slants down a couple inches, so we have a 38 inch height on one of the sides. The brick building on the other side results in a few 'lets' per game. However, once we get the nets up on Mondays and Thursdays (3 to 6 pm), there's always plenty of competition. We actually can play any weekday from 8 to 6 as long as there are two interested people. However, in bad weather we only have access to the room, usually at 3 pm on Mondays and Thursdays, each 12 week session.

Currently a concerted effort is being made to get permission to use some of the many public tennis courts in the area. That will be utopia!

Eleven of us ventured to the Michigan Senior Olympics in July and we had a great time. It is so very impressive how efficient and competent the Pickleball leaders are at running the competition. Of course, the friendliness of almost everyone resulted in an enjoyable experience. Also, just cheering for our Gold Medalists, Elaine and Duane, made the trip worth it.

We look forward to many more Pickleball experiences.

Pickleball making its mark in Oakland

By DAVID McCLELLAND Special to The Oakland Press

Two years ago, most people hadn't even heard of pickleball.

Today, there are close to 40,000 players and that number is growing every month, according Bill Booth, president of the USA Pickleball Association.

Pickleball is a game a lot like tennis and is played indoors on gym floors and outdoors on tennis courts. A plastic, poly baseball with holes is used, as well as short handled, solid wooden paddles.

The court is a downsized tennis court and is 20 feet wide by 44 feet deep, with colored tape to define the court, the serving box and the “kitchen,” which is an area 7 feet deep on each side of the net.

The serve must be underhand with the paddle below the wrist, bounce in the serving box and the ball must bounce once on the receiver’s side of the net and the server or the receiving team, in the case of doubles, must let the ball bounce once before returning it.

After that, the players may move to the net and the speed of the game increases dramatically.

Points are awarded only to the serving team. Games are played to 11, 15 or 21 depending on the event.

Why is it called pickleball? Apparently, the creator had a dog named Pickles which kept stealing the ball during play. Pickleball was created during the summer of 1965 on Bainbridge Island near Seattle.

Its creators were U.S. Congressman Joel Pritchard, William Bell and Barney McCallum. Initially, families played pickleball in their backyards on a hard surface, on driveways and on residential, dead end streets.

Since the mid-70s , the sport has expanded. It is now played in schools, parks and recreation centers.

FYI

To learn to play pickleball, instruction is available at 9:30 a.m. every Monday and Wednesday at the Auburn Hills Community Center. Call (248) 370-9353 for more information.

The Michigan Senior Olympics will be played from 7:30 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 7, and Wednesday, July 8, at the Auburn Hills Community Center. More games will be played at the Older Persons Commission in Rochester at the same times on July 9 and July 10.

The Michigan Senior Olympics turns 30 this summer, and Sheila Tinnion, the marketing and sponsorship director of the event, said the games are ready to celebrate.

The MSO takes place July 5-12 in Rochester and surrounding communities.

Tinnion said all events are free for spectators and added that fans are encouraged to come out and cheer on the 700 athletes who are taking part in the games.

"We'd love them to come out," she said. "It's great for the athletes to have that support, and this year, because it's the 30th, we're doing some fun social events." One of the major social events is the Dinner and Celebration of Athletes at 5 p.m. July 6 at the Older Person's Commission in Rochester. Tinnion said there will be a disco theme in honor of 1979, the year the games began.

Tickets for the dinner are $10, and guest speaker Bill Laimbeer will join the patrons.

Other social events include the 5K fun run/ walk at 10 a.m.

July 6 starting at the OPC, along with the 30 Frames for 30 Years and the Oldies Party at 3 p.m.

July 8 at Classic Lanes in Rochester Hills.

The cost is $5 for the run/ walk and $8 for the bowling; each guest gets to bowl three games or 30 frames.

"It's just a way of getting the community to support it and for the athletes that are in town to enjoy it, as well," Tinnion said of the social events.

As for the games, there are 39 events, and Tinnion said they are as much about camaraderie as they are about gold medals. "I think it's very upbeat," she said. "You hear a lot of laughter and communication, so everyone is making friends and supporting each other.

"You get a sense that they're here for each other and want to do well for each other."
However, winning a gold medal isn't bad, either.

Gene Meyer, 77, of St. Clair Shores has competed the past 12 years. This time around, he's partaking in bocce ball and a basketball free-throw contest. Meyer has his share of medals, winning a gold in bocce ball three years in a row, but said just staying active is the most important part. "It's not just getting your name in a book," he said. "You've got to keep moving. If you don't move it, you're going to lose it."
Dick Manasseri, 65, of Rochester Hills is going to compete in various pickleball competitions.

This is his third time competing in the MSO, and he has won six medals.

"I think I got in early, when the competition wasn't as strong," he joked. "I think the chances of me repeating will take a real effort this time around." Manasseri said he makes sure to get to other events to support his fellow seniors and witness their athletic ability.

"You'll see seniors throwing the javelin and doing the long jump; it's really impressive," he said. "I have to say, my impression is that those folks are hard-core athletes." For a schedule of athletic and social events, visit the MSO's Web site at www.michiganseniorolympics. org.

You can also register for the social events by calling the OPC at (248) 656-1403.

A "Pickleball Goodies" Good Report!

Dear Dick,

Wanda Vasko, the person in charge of Sports and Fitness at the Clinton Township Senior Center, has asked me to pass on to you, and all of the Pickleball people, how impressed she, and we at the Clinton Township Senior Center, are with Tom Valentine's representation of, and dedication to, the game of Pickleball and it's enjoyment.

We invited Tom to our Gym to show us his "Pickleball Goodies" a couple of weeks ago, and he came over with numerous paddles from which to choose. He allowed us to "test drive" the various paddles to see which fit our needs best. His prices were also very reasonable. Tom then donated some indoor Pickleballs to the Center where, until then, we were using the outdoor version that came with the Pickleball set. He then joined us in some fun and spirited games of Pickleball.

Thank you for passing on Tom's name to us, and, of course, thanks to Tom for his help in advancing our enjoyment of the game.

Don Kolke

Thank You to Mark Friedenberg
by Bill Booth
President, USAPA

After 4½ years as president of the USAPA, Mark Friedenberg has stepped down as president. In early 2005, Mark and a group of enthusiastic players had the foresight to create the "new" USAPA to replace the original organization which was not well organized at the time. They created the original board of directors, shown here on the history page, to promote the sport and direct the policies and objectives of the USAPA.

In the following years, under the direction of Mark and the board, there were many achievements for pickleball and the USAPA.
  • The USAPA has become recognized as the governing body for pickleball.
  • Training material for players and referees is on training.usapa.org (free for all players).
  • Rules were thoroughly reviewed and revised. The first rulebook was published in 2008 and a second printing and revision was published in 2009.
  • Many marketing materials have been produced for sale and to promote memberships.
  • An Ambassador program was created to spread the word about this exciting sport throughout the U.S. and Canada. The sport is truly growing at the grass-roots level.
  • The membership base is currently well over 1500 members and growing rapidly (up over 120% in 12 months and 54% in the first 6 months of 2009).
  • The national pickleball tournament in November will be the largest tournament ever attended.
  • We have been successful at getting pickleball into the winter games of the National Senior Games Association and are working hard to get into the summer games.
  • Coverage in the media has been increasing with newspaper articles and televised features as enthusiastic players tell their stories.
  • Pickleball has become America’s fastest growing senior sport. Conservative estimates put the number of players at close to 40,000 and growing. That number is based on our Places to Play database with the actual number of players where known and conservative estimates where the number of players per court is not known.
  • Our non-profit organization has grown monetarily to the point where we can finance activities important for the growth of pickleball. We are in the second year of financing assistance to players starting new programs to bring people into the sport. Plans are well under way to finance promotional efforts at the regional and local level to promote pickleball among the general public and recreation professionals.
  • The website has become the best comprehensive source of information about pickleball including tournament schedules, tournament results, tournament software, ladder/league software, sanctioning information, featured news articles, places to play, official rules, rankings points, training for players and referees, player forum, and more.
  • Young players are being introduced to the sport through an increasing number of programs in middle schools, high schools and colleges.
  • Paddle testing procedures and specifications have been developed to preserve the character and integrity of the sport as we have all come to know it.
  • Pickleball is growing internationally with the formation of Pickleball Canada and players in Kenya, Cyprus, Japan, Mexico, Singapore, India, England, Australia, and New Zealand.

Mark, thank you for your vision and dedication to promoting pickleball. The sport would not be where it is today without your leadership. Mark will continue to help promote the sport by serving on the board as Past President.

Destination "PoP! POp!" OR "R&R" Redefined

Does the destination your sweetie picked for your long awaited for second honeymoon "just happen" to coincide with the USAPA National Tournament !?!

Our 'younger friends' popularized "destination weddings". Pickers are popularizing destination vacations focused on PICKLEBALL possibilities! For those of us seriously infected with PickleballMania, our GPS is set to the sound of the "PoP! POp!" on the paddle!

This post is dedicated to Papa Razz, my beloved Kiddos, and ALL of the faithful non-pickleball playing family members that have seen their loved one infected with a strange "mania" that has them looking up USAPA Places to Play before they plan the family vacation.

A humorous look at the addictive nature of pickleball.
