Troy Tournament Results: A Smashing Good Time!

Troy Community Center hosted two high quality PICKLEBALL tournaments for the holidays, December 20 and December 27. Tournament Director Elaine Torvinen wrote:

A smashing good time was had by all involved in the Troy Holiday Smash Pickleball Tournament held Dec. 20 at the Troy Community Center. Twenty six teams competed in four different divisions which included Men’s 50 and over and Men’s 65 and over and a Women’s and Co-ed 50 and over divisions.

Lee Kuczmanski and Rich Bauer were the winners in the Men’s 65 and over division defeating Ed Cova and Bill Walker in the final 15-6.

Larry Kraus and Gary Ball defeated Pat McPhail and Jack Licata in the Men’s 50 and over division by a score of 15-11.

Lynn and Vic Wittkowski defeated Jeff Pariseau and Sook Wilkinson in the Co-ed final.

Forty players mixed it up in Troy on Sunday December 27 in the Second Annual Troy Mixed Generation Pickleball Tournament. Teams were divided into groups of four and played a round robin among the four teams in each pool.

At the conclusion of pool play the top team in each pool randomly selected a number to be placed in a bracket for playoffs. The playoffs consisted of two out of three 11 point games for a match. The following teams made it to the bracket for playoffs.

Mark and Paul Korff played Dick and Michael Manasseri in the first round game and Dick and Michael were victorious with scores of 11-10 and 11-3.

In the next two matches Suri Nellogi and Andy Torvinen defeated Nicole Cassel and Gary Bejin 11-4 and 11-5 to advance. Dick and Michael Manasseri were defeated by Dan Ross Sr. and Dan Ross Jr. in a hard fought three game match.

In the final Andy and Suri defeated Dan and Dan with scores of 11-3 and 11-6.

"What's hot, what's not" by Susan R. Pollack, Detroit News

I'm not cool enough to know (or even care to know) "what's in" and "what's out". But I think it's really cool that PICKLEBALL made the 2009 Detroit News "IN" List!

What's hot, what's not
It's almost time to sweep 2009 under the rug and welcome 2010.

Materialism, wastefulness and greed are out,
victims of a shrinking economy.
Resourcefulness, recycling and sustainability
are the nation's new mantra as we
say goodbye to 2009 and welcome 2010 with
a cost-conscious, comfort-focused,
pared-down mentality.

Here's a snapshot of
what's hot and what's not...

Legendary Christmas Pickle

Merry Christmas to ALL and to ALL a good game!

"The popular legend says the Christmas Pickle ornament is the last ornament hung on the Holiday tree. The first child to find it will receive an extra gift from beloved Santa Claus. As there are other versions to the Pickle Legend, the true goal of tradition is to foster family values, create cherished memories, to bridge generations, and allow ourselves to connect to our past. Our hand blown Christmas Pickle was created to support the rich family traditions reflective of our programs at Greenfield Village." The Henry Ford Museum Catalog

Pickleball - A Song from the Heart

Blanka Filipek is a retired PE and biology teacher from Czech Republic. She began playing Pickleball while vacationing in Sky Valley Hot Spring Resort, CA. Her love of the game inspired her to compose a song with rhythm that resembles the sound of the ball going back and forth.

Partner Search:
MSO will not accept applications without partners. Thus, there is not a master list of athletes who are looking for a partner.

Here are your options:

1) If you signed up for the Pickleball Skills Drills at OPC, December 11, there will be partner search opportunities available for you.

2) USAPA provides a place on their website for you to search for a partner:

3) The link below is the list of players from the MSO summer games in July that you may find helpful:
