How-to Update the USAPA Places To Play Listings

USAPA Places To Play MI Pickleball
Additions and/or updates needed for your local area courts?!?

How-to Update the USAPA Places To Play Listings
A simple guide from USAPA President Bill Booth

"Updating the Places to Play is really simple. Refer to the screen capture below that has been annotated with red arrows pointing to the parts that I will be referring to. All of the pages have a link to add another place. Click on the link to bring up the form. Fill out the form and click on the "Add Record" button. That is all there is to it.

"To edit the place, just click on the place name. Change the relative information and click on the "Update Record" button.

"Please list every location in a separate record. It is important to have a good address so that it can be mapped. We get an email for every addition or edit so that we can monitor it. We manually add the latitude and longitude so that the map works. Each record has a comment section to leave information about playing times, schedule, or any other relevant information.

Calling All Gently Used Paddles

Dear Players,

Do you have a used pickleball paddle you are willing to part with -- for a good cause?!?

One of Michigan's most well respected pickleball players, Jan Doke, works at a Latchkey program for children ages 5-12. Jan brought her paddles in one day for the children to try. "They loved it"!

Jan Doke is going to teach the children at the Latchkey program how to play picklebball. She is trying to collect 20 paddles for the Latchkey program and a community program she would like to start for children in Hartland, MI.

Jan is a wonderful teacher! She has the right temperament, skill set, and energy to help children learn to make life-impacting healthy choices. I raise my paddle to Jan Doke -- and I am happy to be among the first to add that paddle to her Latchkey program pickleball equipment box.

If you have a used, but still functional, paddle(s) for the children Jan Doke will be teaching please:
  • give the paddle(s) directly to Jan Doke when you see her on the courts
  • give the paddle(s) to Tom Valentine, Larry Sagowitz, Clare Bushman or me and we will deliver them to Jan Doke
  • email me if you have any questions or want more information
Thank you!

Yours in pickleball, Janet Razz

Hartland High School Seniors VS Hartland Senior Center Picklers

LivingstonDaily.com ::: March 12, 2010

By Frank Konkel • DAILY PRESS & ARGUS

The pickleballers from the Hartland Senior Center are not to be messed with.

Hartland High School seniors learned that lesson the hard way March 4, making good on a challenge they issued to face the pickleballers from the senior center in a series of doubles matches.

The senior center players schooled their younger counterparts in doubles matches, 8-1, in front of senior center "cheer gals" and bleachers full of spectators at Hartland High School.

"Oh, my Lord, we mopped the floor with them, but we knew we would," said senior center pickleball player Connie Anderson, who acknowledged most of the high school seniors didn't have much pickleball experience. On the contrary, some of the senior center players have won pickleball tournaments. Pickleball is a relatively new game that's a cross between pingpong, badminton, racquetball and tennis.

"We all had so much fun, you wouldn't believe," Anderson said. "The kids were fantastic, as polite as could be and gracious, too. They kept challenging us, and we just stopped counting at 8-1. They were proud to get that one point."

The challenge was set up by Anderson's granddaughter, high school student Erika Paajanen, for her senior project.

Paajanen volunteered at the center over the summer, and she said she wanted to do something that would bring both generations together. Paajanen said she knew her classmates were going to have a difficult time facing the seniors, having witnessed many of them dominate the courts over the summer.

But by the time the nine doubles matches were over, winning or losing didn't really matter.

"I think it's cool to get the two generations together," Paajanen said. "Besides hanging out with our grandmas and grandpas, we don't get a lot of interaction with seniors. This was definitely fun."

Paajanen said she received tons of feedback from her peers March 5 at school, despite the beat-down she and her 11 classmates took. It's an event she'd like to see happen again — though she would like to see the Hartland High School seniors exact a little revenge.

"I hope so," Paajanen said. "But they're very good."

“Arizona Soft Game Workshop” Kalamazoo YMCA

“Hello Pickleball Friends! We hope you can join us for this workshop to learn the Arizona Soft Game. We are holding it on a Saturday afternoon to make it easier for our out of town friends to participate. It's a great way to expand your game and prepare for the upcoming May 20-21, Kalamazoo Doubles Tournament.” Bob Northrop and Melissa Muha

  • Kalamazoo YMCA, 1001 W. Maple Street, Kalamazoo, MI
  • $10 per person
  • $2 discount for YMCA & USAPA members
“Soften your game! The Arizona Soft Game is alive and well in doubles. The third shot is often a drop shot into the kitchen. After that shot there is much "dinking around" until someone tragically dinks too high. Once they remove the ball from their person, the cycle is repeated!”
Workshop by Jim and Yvonne Hackenberg

As national competitors, Jim & Yvonne have the complete game of pickleball! Join them at this workshop to learn the fine points of the Arizona Soft Game and its ability to confound your opponent.

Bloomfield Andover High School Pickleball Announcements From Jim Luzod

Bloomfield Andover High School Pickleball Announcement From Jim Luzod

"There is special testing for the students at Bloomfield Andover HS, Tues March 9. We will not be able to use the fieldhouse for our normal fun and games tomorrow morning. We will be open for business again Thursday, Mar 11 at 10:00.

Also the school will be closed down April 6 and 8 for the Spring break. No play at Andover HS that week. We will continue again on April 13 and play to April 29, our last day for this season.

Many players have asked about playing outdoors in Bloomfield. We have two courts with official painted lines at Bloomfield Hills Middle School on W Quarton Rd and two courts at Eastover Middle School, Opdyke/Kensington. We have no programs planned for those locations. I will be around all summer and I can help you set up play groups, introduce friends to Pickleball, and help you get your family into the game.

See you on the courts. JPL"

Pickleball Tournament Points Update for 2010 by Marilyn Holladay, USAPA Board of Directors/Tournament Points Chair

Tournament Points Update for 2010

The USAPA Board regularly reviews game and tournament rules and procedures in order to keep the game true to its roots while clarifying issues that arise, as we have more and more players competing in tournaments.

January 1, 2010 saw a few changes and many clarifications in the area of points earned for winning tournament events. The list of approved events now includes 19+ as an age group in response to the growing number of younger players. The 4.5+ rated event was dropped in favor of separate 4.5 and 5.0 events to reflect the fact that there is a growing number of 5.0 players. This change enables the 4.5s and 5.0s to each have a competetive event more focused on their skill level. Masters and Legends have been dropped as events which earn points.

"Ranking Points" was changed to "Tournament Points" to try to avoid the confusion among the terms 'points', 'rankings' and 'ratings'. Receiving large numbers of points does not automatically give you a high rating -- ratings reflect the level of player the winner defeated to gain those points.

First, second and third place points will only be awarded if there are 4 or more people who compete in the event. If there are only 3 competitors, medals may be given to all, but only first and second place winners will get points. If there are only 2 competitors, points go only to the first place winner.

Tournament Directors are encouraged to offer additional events not on the approved list in the interest of matching the profile of participants. For example, mixed generation doubles is becoming very popular. Medals/trophies may be awarded, but Tournament Points will not be assigned.

See Tournament Points for more detail on all tournament points rules.

To find out your point totals see Points Inquiry . This will give you the 2010 totals. To see 2009, change the year near the top right of the screen.

To see where you finished compared to others in the various events for the year 2009 go to Rankings History .

Potential changes under consideration for 2011 that have been identified so far include the following:

- splitting Doubles points from Mixed Doubles points

- awarding points in the player's own age group if age brackets were combined due to insufficient numbers

If you have opinions on these or other Tournament Points rules or comments, go to USAPA Contacts and select Marilyn Holladay for your email. Please be specific in your comments.

Again, our goal is to make pickleball accessible, fun, and fair to players of all ages. We will publish proposed changes for 2011 on the USAPA website by July 1, 2010 for your comments and input.
